Professor Sung Ki Baik
President, Pohang University of Science and Technology, South Korea

Professor Sung Ki Baik is the fifth President of Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) and an authority on advanced ceramic materials. He has great interest in the propagation of the value and importance of the higher education in science and engineering, as well as nurturing global leadership through education.
Before joining POSTECH in 1986, as a founding member and faculty of the Materials Science and Engineering Department, Prof. Baik was a research staff member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
He served as Director of Pohang Accelerator Laboratory from 2000 to 2004 and President of the Korean Ceramic Society in 2009. He is currently serving as Chair of the World Premier Materials Development Planning Committee of the Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy, a post he has held since 2009. He is also Chair of the Science and Technology Committee of the Korean Presidential Advisory Council on Education, Science and Technology. He is also a member of the World Academy of Ceramics, and the National Academy of Engineering of Korea.
He received his bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Seoul National University, and a Ph.D. in Materials Science from Cornell University where he received the McMullen Fellowship.
