Dr. Michael Ortiz

Dr. Michael Ortiz has been the President of the California State Polytechnic University since 2003. Prior to that he was the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the California State University, Fresno. He has also held senior management and academic roles at the Colorado State University, Pueblo and Appalachian State University.

He is the recipient of many awards and citations throughout his career, the most recent being the 2011 Alfredo G. de los Santos Jr. Distinguished Leadership in Higher Education Award presented by the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education and the 2010 Exceptional Leader Award as Pomona’s Exceptional Community Member presented by Abstract Minds.

He maintains a strong commitment to community service in the Los Angeles and Pomona areas and is also a member of several academic boards including the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Ortiz holds a B.U.S. in English, secondary education and coaching, and an MA in special education, from the University of New Mexico. He obtained his Ph D in early childhood special education from the University of North Carolina.
