Professor Mark Balnaves is Senior Research Fellow in New Media and co-director of the Centre for Culture and Technology (CCAT) at Curtin University, Western Australia.

Prof. Balnaves is internationally recognized for his work on the global diffusion of media, originally in his co-authored work, The Penguin Atlas of Media, translated into a number of languages, and more recently his book Rating the Audience.

His current research is on the role of social media in politics together with its role in the future of the media professions themselves. His professional background is in television production and journalism. He keeps in touch with his production side as co-curator of a major exhibition of the history of media in Western Australia. As part of this exhibition he has written a biography of Sir James Cruthers, the founder of Channel 7 in Perth.
